Diapers Hard to Find; Perpetuates Public Health Problems

Denver, CO – Local law firm, Wills & Wellness (willsandwellness.com), is hosting its Second Annual Diaper Drive right now through October 1, 2014.

The firm is attempting to beat its goal from last year of collecting over 1,000 diapers for needy families in Denver. Diaper Banks are hard to find in Denver and one major resource, the Diaper Bank of the Rockies closed down in the last year. Diaper Banks are constantly working to keep their inventory stocked. In honor of National Diaper Need Awareness Week (Sept. 8 – 14), the pressure is on to highlight this little known problem in the community.

Wills & Wellness Client Services Director, Kim Johnson is leading the effort. “It’s a terrible tragedy that the children of poor families are hurt by a lack of access to diapers, yet government assistance programs allow the purchase of non-nutritional food products. It seems that the program could be changed to better help those in need – especially the children.”

Food stamps and government programs do not cover paper products – though families can purchase soda, candy, certain energy drinks, and even lobster with their benefits. (Source: CO Dept. of Human Services).

Diapers are a constant need for struggling families. The consequences of a lack of diapers leads to psychological effects in children and health problems for the community. Babies left in soiled diapers all day can develop skin and urinary tract infections, among other health problems.
Another problem is that most drop-in daycare facilities require a package of diapers for children left in their care for the day. Without daycare for small children, looking for a job is a lot harder for the parent. And the cycle continues..

This Diaper Drive will benefit various programs of the Catholic Charities of Denver, including the Gabriel House that provides assistance for struggling mothers, several area homeless shelters, and The Family Tree, a non-denominational center for families in poverty..

Sponsors of this years’ Diaper Drive include: Wills & Wellness, Va Va Bloom, Rosa Linda’s Mexican Cafe, Amaryllis Therapy Network, the Business Impact Group, and The Family Room.
